Safety Tips for Running

So over the past few weeks I have been glued to the news in regards to the disappearance & now murder of Meredith Emerson. It is definitely a situation that hits close to home. Not just because it happened within 2 hours of where I live but also because Meredith was a relatively active young women. She was out doing something she did often and enjoyed so much. Hiking with her dog Ella she somehow came across the likes of Gary Hilton. He is now charged in her brutal and senseless murder.

I work at a running store and many people (especially women) have been coming in over the last few weeks to get pepper spray. I carry it everywhere with me but it is definitely nice to have something like that when you are walking, running or hiking alone. Some tips to consider in order to safer when you are out:
* Try to run with a partner or better yet a group
* If you do have to run alone, try to pick busier areas where there is always a lot of people around
* Try not to run at night if you can help it - if it is stay in well lit areas
* Carry your cell phone & pepper spray
* Don't run with headphones & is you do keep them down low where you can still be aware of your surroundings
* Plan your routes out and leave them with family or friends
* Have some form of identification on you
* Trust your gut!

Be safe everyone!
